The Story of Harold’s 80th Birthday Celebration
A gorgeous clear blue sky would be reign overhead when Harold’s and his family’s 2 years in the planning would come together to celebrate the milestone of his 80th. Each ten years marks another decade of living a life surrounded by good friends and family and his lovely wife Roma. Almost immediately he begins to look forward to the next milestone as soon as one party is tidied up…to read more and see more pickies click here
It’s a time where all his children and grandchildren come together and spend time with each other, swapping anecdotes about their childhood’s and the affectionate memories they hold of their dear dad & pop. You can understand why it is they love him, his wonderfully warm smile and the way he takes your hand, looks you straight in the eye and begins to tell you a story or a cheeky joke.
They would once again rest on the front porch of the house he built with his own two hands. In Harold’s 50th year on their 25th wedding anniversary they hired a professional photographer to take a family portrait. It has been treasured and proudly hung over the fireplace since. Each 10 years thereafter on pop’s birthday it has been recreated with each member in the same pose, same place. Time has left it’s mark and not everyone is able to sit where they once did but still the tradition continues.
After the laughter and teasing each other has ceased its time to step inside and delight in a nice home cooked meal. A family is raised around a kitchen table under the watchful eye of mum and dad, guiding their children in the hope they become happy and well adjusted adults. What a fantastic job is evident here as you meet each one of their children and grandchildren who are gracious, humble and kind. Sharing the news with each other over a simple bowl of soup is enough to make them all appreciate where they now are in their lives.
The time has come for the big event, stage was set, decorations up, loads of tea cups at the ready & guests soon to arrive to celebrate. We would hear the contributions & attributes of this generous and devoted pillar of the community. Involved in so many ways from being one of the founders of the aquatic club at Bonnie Doon to driving the local kids up and down the bogie ranges as the bus driver. Today he was surrounded by all his favorites and he couldn’t be happier.
Daughter Sue’s speech told us how everyone fitted into his “life is like a box of chocolates” namely a box of favorites. He married his dreamgirl Roma in 1959, making her the Dream. The Turkish Delights are his children and their partners who delight him each and every day, their children that melt his heart and make him soft and gooey inside are the Caramels just to name a few. The ‘Moro’ of the story was that everyone is dad’s favourite.
We are so glad that now we are one of them too as we enjoy chats with Harold and hear the wonderful tales he tells. What an honour it is to know you Harold, you never fail to make us smile. Thank you for letting us into your home and document a day that even bilbo baggins of the hobbit would be proud of. What a wonderful gift your kids have once again bestowed on you that we know you will treasure.
